Awards Ceremony
We just held our first awards ceremony this school
year on Friday, March 12, 2010. Participants included students, their parents,
teachers and staff. Students were recognized for their achievements and
improvement throughout the school year. They were presented with a certificate
as well as gift cards. Categories included citizenship, for our top DRS point
recipients, High Honor and Honor roll. We also gave awards out for Perfect
attendance and department awards for each class subject. Students that either
had great improvements or excelled in that subject were nominated by their
teachers to be awarded. We had more than 100 recipients! We would like to thank
all the parents that were able to attend and support their students. Also to all
students, keep up the good work!
Physical Education
Fundraisers
MSA-3 Fist Annual Jog-A-Thon
We held a jog-a-thon November
12-November 13 to help raise money for our Physical Education Department.
Students had 35 minutes to run as many laps possible. Their laps were sponsored
by parents and members of the community.
Penny Wars
Classes competed against each other by
collecting coins and recyclable bottles. The winning group from both events 7B
and 8A were given Pizza Parties. We were able to raise $2,000 from both
events.
Mulligan’s Family Fun Center
Outing
On Friday November 13th magnolia
science academy Carson had an after school outing at mulligan's family fun
center. Students engaged in a number of different fun activates such as riding
go carts, playing laser tag, rock climbing, hitting balls in the batting cages,
playing mini golf, and arcades.
Special Visitor
On Tuesday Nov. 24th, Mr. Brian
Bushway, with World Access for the Blind came in and spoke to our 6th and 7th
grade students in Mr. Kim's social studies class.
He told the students his
amazing life story, which includes becoming an accomplished musician, learning
how to mountain bike, and achieving many other great things in life, all after
he lost his vision at the age of 14!
He taught the students how to become
successful despite having setbacks and gave a very inspiring message of hope.
Canned Food
Drive
From now until Wednesday December 13th
we will be having a canned food drive. We will be donating canned foods to the
Los Angeles food bank to ensure that all families have a happy holiday and that
no children go hungry this winter.
The class with the most cans will get an ice
cream party right before winter break. Be the change you would like to see in
the world.
Soccer Club/Turkish
Club
Bake sales have been going on during
lunch to raise funds for our clubs. Our goal is to raise money for Soccer
Jerseys as well as money for our Europe Trips. So far we have successfully
raised $400. We are on our way to our goals.
NASA Invention
Club
We had a very fun and successful Car
Race fundraiser. We had several students race remote control cars. Our winner
was Evan Jackson. He won a pizza party. We also joined and became a part of the
JPL NASA Invention Challenge. We passed the regional contest at the Orange
County Convention Center. We also made the finals held at the JPL Laboratory in
Pasadena. We were placed 7th overall. You can watch us at www.ustream.tv/channel/nasajpl as we test our invention of the

AMSP
On December 1, 09 we were part of the
AC Compete Test. Almost 250 students participated. It was given by Accord
Institute. 25 schools participated in an online computer test about Scratch
Programming. Our school ranked 5th amongst 25 other schools. Chistopher
Balestreri won 3rd place and Natalie Esquivias won 5th.
We have had several bake sales during
lunch and were able to raise $260 towards transportation for our Winter Camp,
being held 12/18/09-12/23/09 in Sacramento, Ca. 13 Students will be attending.
There will be several Math Competitions in this state wide event.
During the month of February we are
observing Black History Month
We just closed february, wich was Black History
Month. We celebrated this month in different ways. We had weekly highlight of
famous african americans in our history in our Newsletter. Some of them were,
Martin Luther King Jr, Shirley Chisholm, Oprah Winfrey, and Carter Woodson. We
enlightened our readers with different stories and contributions from our famous
african american leaders. We also observed black history month with our very own
MSA-3 Film Festival- Honoring African Americans throughout History. Every Friday
we showed a different movie in our Computer Room.
In this festival we watched
movies like, More than a game, The long shots, and Michael Jacksons This is it.
We also had pizza and several movie snacks as well as raffles for all of the
attendees. Students also had a chance to earn positive DRS points just for
attending. Winners of the raffle were able to attend a field trip to the science
center, featuring the American I am The African American Imprint Exhibit. I
would like to say that all of our students appreciated and really enjoyed our
celebrations.
“First Annual Presidents’ Day Essay Contest”
I Love My Country
All students were encouraged to participate in this
essay contest. All entries must be a maximum of 500 words, typed using
12-point Times New Roman font, and double spaced. The best three will be
competing at Magnolia Schools wide Essay competition.

History Thru the Arts Club
Our history thru the arts club has held two very
successful fundraisers this month.
We had a bake sale and Candy gram sale at
lunch. Students were able to buy different goodies donated by club members and
their parents. They also had the option to purchase Candy Grams. These grams
were given out on the Friday before Valentine’s Day. Student had a great time
expressing how much they care about all their friends with these grams. Both
fundraisers raised a total of $230!
Haiti Relief
Much like the rest of the country, we here at
Magnolia Science Academy 3 are devastated by the suffering that is taking place
in Haiti after the recent earthquake.
So we have decided to take action.
There
were donations collected in Mrs. Sanchez and Mr. Kim’s social studies classes.
The donations will be given to a relief organization that is working with
Haiti.
Students, parents and teachers are urged to make small sacrifices in
order to help save lives in Haiti.
We collected a total of $972
Future City Club
MSA-3 is in the News: Congratulations
to our Future City Team! MSA-3 participated in the National Engineers Week
Future City Competition. We competed against the other selected 13 middle
schools of the Los Angeles area.
